A Canadian man has been jailed after authorities say he had been buying and using the drug sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, from Canadian pharmacy.
Pfizer Inc., the world’s biggest drugmaker, has agreed to pay $6.3 million to settle a criminal complaint against the British-based company and other major pharmaceutical companies.
The settlement, announced on Friday, follows a settlement reached between Pfizer and other Canadian drugmakers and other third-party manufacturers in the United States, where the company has been accused of selling drugs to the unlicensed public.
In a separate settlement, Pfizer agreed to pay a $3.2 million criminal fine and $2.4 million in damages to the unlicensed manufacturers of Viagra and Cialis, the three most-prescribed drugs in Canada, and other drugs sold in the United States.
In addition, the settlement resolves allegations that Pfizer is selling unlicensed drugs to consumers, including Viagra and Cialis, through a company-sponsored website that uses a Web-based marketing tool, or a method of distribution, to the unlicensed and unlicensed consumers.
Pfizer said that it would not be liable for any damages arising out of the criminal investigation.
Pfizer said it will pay $1.6 million to settle the criminal complaint, plus $1.2 million to settle an ongoing investigation into the company’s use of sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, as a drug to treat erectile dysfunction.
The company said it is still looking into the case but was not disclosing the settlement to the public.
The company’s website also says the drugmaker has “provided a comprehensive” list of customers to help protect against counterfeiting, the list includes those who have purchased the drugs and those who are looking for alternatives.
The company said it also sells the drug without a prescription through a “licensed online pharmacy that provides access to the drug without a prescription.”
Pfizer said the settlement resolves all the criminal allegations and will fund the investigation in the future.
“We are very pleased with the outcome of this case,” said Pfizer’s CEO, Jeff Kindler.
“We are extremely grateful to Pfizer and the company for making this possible for Canadians.
“We are looking forward to working with our Canadian counterparts to secure the agreement and to resolve this matter together.
“We are committed to furthering our mission to provide safe, quality Canadian healthcare by making Canadian healthcare a priority.”
The Canadian government has also said it will pay $100 million to settle the criminal complaint and related civil litigation.
Canadian pharmaceutical company Teva Pharmaceuticals Canada has agreed to pay $1.2 million to settle a criminal investigation into alleged improper use of sildenafil by Canada’s third-party distributors, including Pfizer and other third-party drugmakers.
The company said the settlement resolves all allegations and will fund the investigation in the future.
“Pfizer continues to pursue individuals who have used the drug for unlicensed and unlicensed use,” the company said in a statement.
Pfizer’s drugmaker Canada Pharmacy also has agreed to pay $1.2 million to settle an investigation into alleged anticompetitive conduct by Teva Pharmaceuticals, a division of Canadian pharmaceutical group Cipla Ltd, which it also is accused of.
In addition, the company agreed to pay $1.

Taking them together can cause a significant and potentially life-threatening drop in blood pressure (hypotension), leading to dizziness, fainting, or even heart attack or stroke. It is contraindicated to use Cialis with nitrates or recreational "poppers" (amyl nitrites).
2.Alpha-blockers (e.g., prazosin, terazosin, tamsulosin): Both Cialis and alpha-blockers relax blood vessels, which can lead to excessive blood pressure reduction when used together. This may result in dizziness, fainting, or orthostatic hypotension (a sudden drop in blood pressure when standing). If needed, your doctor may adjust the dosage or recommend spacing the medications.
3.Other antihypertensive drugs (e.g., atenolol, propranolol, enalapril, lisinopril): Cialis can enhance the blood-pressure-lowering effects of these medications. While this interaction is usually less severe than with nitrates or alpha-blockers, it can still cause dizziness or fainting in sensitive individuals. Close monitoring of blood pressure is recommended.
Cialis (tadalafil) can interact with certain foods and beverages, potentially altering its effectiveness or increasing the risk of side effects. Here are the key drug-food interactions to be aware of:
